Rough ankle joint

Ankle joint roughness

Ankle joint roughness (ankle joint erosion) is a disease that mostly affects young people. The ankle joint is less susceptible to erosion and roughness than other joints such as the knee or hip joint. This is due to the structure of the ankle cartilage, which is more tolerant of pressure compared to the cartilage of the knee and hip joints. Therefore, ankle joint roughness usually appears for tangible reasons such as sports injuries, traumatic injuries or accidents. Only about 5% to 10% of ankle joint roughness cases occur without any tangible cause.\

Diagnosis

Ankle joint roughness is diagnosed through:

Clinical examination, medical history and clinical symptoms. For example, the patient usually visits the doctor when he suffers from pain when exerting effort or when performing his daily activities, or when he suffers from a previous injury to the ankle joint and other clinical symptoms.

X-rays: X-rays are taken in different positions to investigate the presence of narrowing in the ankle joint and evaluate the position of the ankle joint from multiple aspects.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): This is used to evaluate the condition of the joint's connective tissues, ligaments, and internal structures of the ankle joint to show the extent of atrophy, wear, or damage to soft tissues that do not appear on X-rays.

Ankle joint roughness is evaluated in four stages: first, second, third, and fourth degree roughness, which is considered the most severe stage of roughness and means complete or near-complete erosion of the cartilaginous surface of the ankle joint.

Treatment

In the early stages of ankle joint roughness, conservative treatment options may be used, including changing lifestyle by reducing pressure on the affected joint, losing weight, physical therapy, or using anti-inflammatory drugs, painkillers, and other solutions (details on the link).

In some moderate or advanced cases, it may be necessary to free the joint from floating joint bodies through an endoscope, or remove damaged cartilage surfaces and cartilage roughness, or rebuild ligaments.

Ankle joint replacement surgery or ankle joint stabilization surgery. It is considered the last resort in case conservative solutions or other previous solutions are ineffective. The type of injury and the condition of the injured person also play an important role in giving priority to fixing the joint or replacing it. Regenerative therapy: It is considered one of the latest methods for dealing with cases of joint osteoarthritis, and is considered an alternative treatment for patients with ankle osteoarthritis. This treatment program provides an alternative solution that works to relieve pain and improve movement. It is done by extracting fat cells rich in stem cells from the patient's own tissue and injecting them into the ankle joint. The principle of this method is based on stimulating the healing process and self-healing of the damaged cartilage and tissues in the joint, which cannot be achieved through the methods mentioned above. Regenerative therapy is an ideal option for early, intermediate and some advanced cases, so we recommend that all our patients address the cases before it is too late.
